3_weeks, 3_days and 3_minutes:Barcelona

Grafted Cede Theatre and Espai en Construccio invite you to join us this summer in Barcelona (July 7th – 25th 2014), and discover the movements of a city full of unique architecture, classical and modern art, breathtaking nature, and a bustling urban landscape. Through imagination and play, our aim is to encourage performers to find their own creative voice and uncover the skills to build new and exciting theatre.

3 weeks of exploration into movement and mask, inspired by the city of Barcelona.

3 days of creating and devising new physical theatre;
concluding in a jam-packed night of…

3 minute student creations.

During the course, we will work combining three modes of exploration: movement analysis, improvisation, and the use of mask:

Movement analysis will focus on the techniques of Jacques Lecoq and theories of FM Alexander. We will explore the deconstruction of movement, economy of gesture, and mimetic embodiment of Barcelona’s nature surroundings, architecture and art (Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, the Picasso Museum, the sea).

Improvisation will be dedicated to the motors of “play”. Students will be given themes, which challenge them to embrace their own imaginative potential and to create their own theatre. The class will focus on theatre making, storytelling and the poetics of movement. It will draw on elements of poetry, music and art.

In mask construction and performance we will explore the masks of Lecoq, sculpting characters, as well as dramatic situations. From blocks of clay, each student will be asked to create their own masks and bring them to life. The class will be both theoretical and tactile.

In the final week of the workshop, you will adapt these theories and have the opportunity to construct their own new and individual work of art. You will be given 3 days of “creation time” to build and clarify a 3 minute long performance piece that will be shown on the final day.

The course will be held in Espai Badabadoc in Quevedo Street, 36 in the neighbourhood of Gracia in Barcelona.

Gracia is considered to be one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in Barcelona. With lots of restaurants, bars and local shops; with cinemas, art galleries and theatres, Gracia is full of life. The area is famous for its small squares, full of coffee shops and terraces, where you can have a drink or a meal while listening to live music.

The workshop will primarily be taught in English. The course runs from Monday to Friday (10am to 5pm)
